Introduction to Nagasaki City
1. City Profile
Since its port was opened around 1570, Nagasaki has enjoyed relations with many nations such as Portugal, the Netherlands and China. Through these relations a richly varied culture developed, which continues to this day.
The city has recovered fully from the tragedy of its atomic bombing in the Second World War, and has developed as an international city of culture with shipbuilding, fishing and tourism at its centre. Nagasaki is also a city of peace, and continues to campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of lasting world peace.
The cultural legacy of foreign influences can be found all over the city, in places such as Dejima and in Glover Garden's Western-style buildings. Also, the hillside town areas that surround Nagasaki's distinctive harbor give rise to beautiful scenery, and Nagasaki has become famous as a city blessed with great natural beauty.
